State of Blue came from a day when I felt deeply sad. It holds that quiet moment of sadness and stillness, while also marking a moment of experimentation in my painting.
I explored building the face with blocks of color, letting the blues and shapes carry the feeling. Along the way, I changed the background to teal. It’s a decision I’m still happy with. To me, it gave the painting a sense of calm that belonged with what I was feeling.
This piece is a glimpse of me allowing myself to be still, feel what was there, and try something new.
